Guidant study says carotid artery stenting can be performed by variety of doctors

By Angela McDaniels

Seattle, March 14 - Guidant Corp. said the updated results from its post-approval study of carotid artery stenting suggest that carotid artery stenting in high-risk patients can be performed safely by physicians of different experience levels.

"The results demonstrate that with proper experience levels and device training, carotid stenting can be performed with exemplary results by a variety of physicians in community hospital settings," William A. Gray of the Columbia University Medical Center in New York said in a company news release.

The results were presented on Tuesday at the American College of Cardiology meeting in Atlanta.

Results are based on a cohort of 2,500 patients treated with Guidant's FDA-approved RX Acculink Carotid Stent System and RX Accunet Embolic Protection System. Patients were treated by 315 physicians - including interventional cardiologists, interventional radiologists, interventional neuroradiologists, vascular surgeons and neurosurgeons - at 137 hospitals in the United States, according to the release.

For the ongoing study, the primary endpoints are the rate of 30-day death, stroke and myocardial infarction and the rate of events leading to significant disability or death. Guidant said the current rates are 5.7% and 2.5%, respectively.

Guidant is based in Indianapolis and develops therapies for cardiac and vascular disease.
