Moody’s affirms Aetna, Humana on cancelled merger

Moody's Investors Service said it affirmed the Baa2 senior unsecured debt rating of Aetna Inc. and confirmed the Baa3 senior debt rating of Humana Inc. following Aetna's and Humana's announcements that they mutually ended their plans to merge.

The agency also affirmed the A2 insurance financial strength ratings of Aetna's operating subsidiaries and confirmed the A3 insurance financial strength ratings of Humana's operating subsidiaries.

The outlook on Aetna's ratings remains stable and Humana's ratings were removed from review and assigned a stable outlook.

The joint decision follows a ruling by a U.S. district court blocking the merger on anti-trust grounds and comes 19 months after the companies announced their intention to merge.
