Chembio receives $1.2 million order for Chagas Stat-Pak Rapid Test

By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., Jan. 19 - Chembio Diagnostics, Inc. has received a $1.2 million purchase order from a pan-American public health organization for its Chagas Stat-Pak rapid test, according to a company news release.

The purchase will supply the National Chagas Program, established by Bolivia's Ministry of Health, to screen children in areas of Bolivia where Chagas, a parasitic infectious disease, is most endemic. Deliveries are to be made through the first seven months of 2006, said the company.

The Chagas Stat-Pak assay is a rapid test that detects antibodies to trypanosoma cruzi and provides results in 15 minutes.

Chagas, spread by infected insects, blood transfusions and contaminated food, affects an estimated 16 million adults and children worldwide. Drug therapy is available for infected children age 14 or younger. Nearly 100 million people are at risk in 21 countries. Chagas is responsible for an estimated 50,000 deaths per year, said the release.

Chembio, based in Medford, N.Y., manufactures rapid test products for infectious diseases, including HIV, tuberculosis and Chagas.
