Calypte to launch over-the-counter oral HIV test

Seattle, Jan. 19 - Calypte Biomedical Corp. said it has developed an over-the-counter version of the Aware Oral Fluid HIV-½ Rapid Diagnostic Test.

Calypte expects to launch the product in over-the-counter markets in the United Arab Emirates, where the product has been registered, and then distribute it throughout the Middle East as additional registrations and approvals are obtained.

The test will be distributed by Joseph and Gionis, Calypte's exclusive distributor for 22 Middle Eastern countries.

"Our launch of this over-the-counter product coincides with Arab Health, the largest health care exhibition in the Middle East, being held in Dubai from Jan. 22 to 25," chairman and chief executive officer Roger Gale said in a company news release.

"We have already shipped the initial order to Joseph and Gionis in conjunction with this exhibition and we believe we have sufficient inventory in stock to satisfy anticipated initial sales of this innovative product."

Calypte is a health care company based in Lake Oswego, Ore., that develops and commercializes diagnostic testing products for the detection of sexually transmitted diseases.

Joseph and Gionis is a biotechnology consulting and distribution firm with offices in Newport Beach, Calif., and the United Arab Emirates.
