Norwich diocese: Statement hearing canceled; status conference set

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., Feb. 22 – The disclosure statement hearing for the Norwich Roman Catholic Diocesan Corp., known as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich, was canceled on Tuesday by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut.

The March 2 hearing was replaced with a status conference set to take place on March 14.

The court also plans to give a preliminary order regarding mediator status and possible appointment of a new mediator. As previously reported, the diocese had asked the court to continue mediation through confirmation of a plan.

The official committee of unsecured creditors had objected to the motion for longer mediation, saying the diocese’s plan isn’t consensual and negotiations toward a global resolution are at an impasse.

At the status conference, the court will also consider the committee of unsecured creditors’ motion seeking authority to prosecute and settle insurance coverage claims and causes of auction on behalf of the diocese against Catholic Mutual Relief Society of America.

The Norwich, Conn.-based diocese filed bankruptcy on July 15, 2021 under Chapter 11 case number 21-20687.
