Diocese of Norwich seeks further extension of exclusive plan periods

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., March 30 – Norwich Roman Catholic Diocesan Corp., known as the Roman Catholic Diocese of Norwich, is seeking another extension of its exclusive periods to file and solicit votes on a Chapter 11 plan, according to a motion filed Tuesday with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Connecticut.

Specifically, the diocese asked the court to extend the plan filing period through June 14 from April 15 and the solicitation period through Aug. 15 from June 14.

The diocese said the process of reaching an accurate and fair assessment of its liability for sexual abuse claims and addressing the coverage issues that need to be resolved in formulating a plan of reorganization has been complicated.

“The debtor and other parties in interest require additional time to gather and share the information needed to negotiate a plan of reorganization,” the diocese said in its motion.

The diocese said it has been engaging in negotiations with the official committee of unsecured creditors on a variety of issues. Future mediation between the parties is anticipated to facilitate settlement negotiations to reach plan consensus.

An expedited hearing was scheduled for March 31.

The Norwich, Conn.-based diocese filed bankruptcy on July 15, 2021 under Chapter 11 case number 21-20687.
