Diocese of Syracuse hopes for global resolution; status conference set

By Sarah Lizee

Olympia, Wash., Dec. 9 – Counsel for the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse said it plans to spend the first part of 2023 working on a global resolution of the case, several in-person mediation sessions have been scheduled over the next three months.

At a hearing held Thursday, counsel for the official committee of unsecured creditors told the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of New York that litigation aspects of the case have been set aside “for a chunk of time,” and the parties are now focused on putting together a process to review claims.

The parties are working on putting together a pot of money and coming up with a distribution plan.

A status conference is scheduled for Feb. 16.

The Syracuse, N.Y.-based diocese filed bankruptcy on June 19, 2020 under Chapter 11 case number 20-30663.
