VirtualScopics granted patent for 3D imaging technology

By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., Jan. 31 - VirtualScopics, Inc. said it was granted a U.S. Patent No. 6,984,981 for its new technology, which improves upon the resolution and tissue contrast obtained from conventional MRI.

Using VirtualScopics' unique software algorithms, images from two or more MRI scans are fused together to produce a high-resolution 3D visualization of tissue, according to a company news release.

This is the 7th U.S. patent issued to VirtualScopics for its technology, officials said.

"Our growing software-based technology platform, integrated with our knowledge of imaging techniques and image-based biomarkers, helps our clients speed the development of new treatment options for disease sufferers worldwide," Bob Klimasewski, president and chief executive officer, said in the release.

The patent is officially known as "Magnetic Resonance Method and System Forming an Isotropic, High Resolution, Three Dimensional Diagnostic Image of a Subject from Two-Dimensional Image Data Scans."

VirtualScopics, based in Rochester, N.Y., provides advanced medical image analysis services.
