Norwood Abbey granted U.S. patent for catheter delivery claims

By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., May 1 - Norwood Abbey Ltd. was granted U.S. Patent No 7,020,516 B2, entitled "Catheter for delivering electromagnetic energy for enhanced permeation of substances."

The patent covers 13 claims relating to a catheter capable of delivering high concentration of pharmaceutically active substances and electromagnetic energy into cells and tissues, using blood vessels and body passages as the delivery route, according to a new release.

Electromagnetic energy enables high concentrations of drugs to be delivered directly to target areas inside the body without systemic toxicity and other adverse effects, the company said.

Delivering treatments through body passages could include accessing surrounding tissues and organs, such as treating the prostate through the colon or bladder.

Norwood is a Melbourne, Australia, pharmaceutical company.
