American Bio Medica to supply rapid drugs of abuse tests to Nanogen under supply agreement

By Lisa Kerner

Charlotte, N.C., Aug. 23 - American Bio Medica Corp. said it will sell its rapid drugs of abuse (DOA) tests to Nanogen, Inc. under the companies' recently signed supply agreement.

The Food and Drug Administration-approved immunoassay tests detect up to 15 commonly abused substances including cocaine and methamphetamine, according to a company news release.

The American Bio Medica-manufactured tests will use Nanogen's portable hand-held I-Lynx reader to display results, the company said.

Nanogen will market the tests under the brand name Tox STATus, with distribution slated to begin before the end of the year. The company already globally markets its Cardiac STATus immunoassay tests for rapid emergency room detection of heart attacks.

"The drugs of abuse products supplied by [American Bio Medica] expand our ability to meet the point of care needs of our current customers, and they will also help to attract additional customers," Nanogen chairman and chief executive officer Howard Birndorf said in the release.

A Biotechnology Associates Report said the point of care DOA market is expected to exceed $100 million in 2007.

San Diego-based Nanogen develops diagnostic products.

American Bio Medica, based in Kinderhook, N.Y., develops, manufactures and markets immunoassay diagnostic test kits.
