Aethlon expands device pipeline to include cancer treatment

By Lisa Kerner

Erie, Pa., Feb. 23 - Aethlon Medical, Inc. said it will expand the applications of its Hemopurifier technology to include the treatment of cancer.

The company has also executed an option with Boston University to license a recently filed patent entitled: "Method to Prevent Proliferation and Growth of Metastases."

Aethlon plans to combine the principles of its Hemopurifier platform technology with intellectual property developed by researchers at Boston University as a means to help prevent the spread of cancer following surgery, according to a company news release.

Studies have shown that once cancer has metastasized, surgical removal of the tumor from the primary site causes an elevation of circulating growth factors and related agents which feed cancerous cells and promote tumor growth.

The use of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) inhibitors and other growth factor inhibitors has proved effective in controlling the spread of many types of cancer, but they interfere with the healing process, the company said.

The goal of post-surgery deployment of the Hemopurifier will be to block the surge in circulating growth factors, which occurs over a few days following surgery, without negatively affecting wound healing.

If successful, Aethlon said the Hemopurifier to treat cancer will make it possible to provide surgical interventions in cases where surgery is not presently considered, and will add a significant margin of safety in cases where surgery is considered a viable treatment option.

San Diego-based Aethlon is developing the Hemopurifier medical device to treat infectious disease.
