Smurfit-Stone senior vice president and CFO John Murphy resigns

By Caroline Salls

Pittsburgh, Feb. 25 - Smurfit-Stone Container Corp.'s senior vice president and chief financial officer, John Murphy has resigned, effective immediately, according to a company news release.

The company said Murphy intends to pursue other interests.

Chairman and chief executive officer Patrick J. Moore will lead the finance organization until a permanent successor to Murphy is named.

Moore said in the release that Murphy, who joined Smurfit-Stone in May 2009, "was instrumental in arranging [the company's] exit financing and has provided important leadership through the process."

Smurfit-Stone, a Chicago-based manufacturer of paperboard and paper-based packaging, filed for bankruptcy on Jan. 26, 2009 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware. Its Chapter 11 case number is 09-10235.
