BSD Medical gets $5.9 million quarterly payment for sale of TherMatrx

By Angela McDaniels

Seattle, March 9 - BSD Medical Corp. said it has received a quarterly payment of nearly $5.9 million from the earnout of the sale of TherMatrx Inc. to American Medical Systems Inc.

The payment brings the total payments collected by the company from the sale of TherMatrx to about $33 million, according to a company news release.

The recent payment will be reflected in the company's financial results for the fiscal third-quarter 2006, which began March 1.

The company said it anticipates further compensation in connection with the settlement of the transaction.

BSD Medical is a Salt Lake City-based medical device company that makes microwave and radio frequency heat therapy systems used in the treatment of cancer and other medical conditions.

The company established TherMatrx to commercialize a microwave thermal therapy for the treatment of symptoms associated with enlarged prostate. It then sold its interest in TherMatrx in July 2004 to Minnetonka, Minn.-based medical device maker American Medical Systems in order to use funding from the sale to commercialize its other systems.
