S&P: Ameren unaffected

Standard & Poor's said Ameren Corp.'s (A-/negative/A-2) announcement that its 1,125-megawatt Callaway nuclear station shut down automatically on Jan. 19 does not affect the rating on the company.

S&P said the shutdown occurred as personnel were performing planned maintenance on a device that supplies electrical power to certain plant equipment. While the device was out of service, a backup device lost power momentarily, causing a valve to close in the system that pumps water to the plant's four steam generators. This valve closure reduced the water level in one steam generator, triggering a safety system that caused the shutdown.

The event appears to be minor and given the expected short length of the outage (during a period of low demand), the incident will not harm Ameren's financial profile, according to S&P.
