Interstate Bakeries retirees ask for committee to protect their interests

New York, March 21 - Interstate Bakeries Corp.'s retirees asked for the appointment of an official committee of retired employees to protect their interests.

The request to the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Missouri, from Rudy Norris and Gordon Thomas, notes that non-union retirees are entitled to a committee because Interstate Bakeries is planning to impose "drastic modifications" to their benefits.

The retirees also asked the court to refuse Interstate's request to change the terms of their benefits.

Norris and Thomas said that Interstate itself has said that its planned 400% increase in monthly premiums for retirement benefits will likely cut by two-thirds the number of people participating - and they comment: "Given the massive premium increase, it is easy to imagine that even more participants will be knocked out."

Interstate, a Kansas City, Mo., baker, filed for Chapter 11 on Sept. 22, 2004. Its case number is 04-45814.
